Albanians have been farming mussels in the Butrint lagoon for decades. The result is what most of southern Europe considers some of the best mussels in the region.
The Butrint Lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage site — one of the most pristine estuarine environments in the Balkans. It sits between the ancient ruins of Butrint and the Ionian Sea, fed by cold freshwater springs and tidal salt water. This mixture of fresh and salt water, combined with extremely low industrial pollution, produces mussels with exceptionally clean, sweet flesh — larger than average and deeply flavoured.
Mussel farming in Butrint is low-intensity. Small farms, traditional rope-growing methods, no chemicals. The mussels grow slowly and naturally in water that's cold most of the year.
Fish Shop Ardit. They come in net bags, live, usually 1kg portions. The best time is autumn through early spring — summer heat shortens their window of availability.
When you buy them, they should be closed or close when you tap them. Any mussel that's already open and stays open is dead — don't use it. We only sell live mussels.
The classic Albanian preparation:
You can eat the whole mussel — the liquid is half the point. Albanian families often drink it from the shell.
Butrint mussels are available most of the year, but best from October through April. In the height of summer (July–August) the water gets warm enough to affect quality and the farms sometimes close for the season. Call ahead in August to check availability.
The Butrint ruins are 22km south of Saranda and one of Albania's most impressive archaeological sites — Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers, surrounded by the lagoon that produces the mussels. Many visitors combine a day trip to Butrint with a stop at our shop on the way back.
