Age of the Fish

Fish Shop Ardit: The fish on the counter was in the water 12–24 hours ago. It came off a local boat overnight. Nothing is held over from the previous day.

Supermarkets: Fish in Albanian supermarkets is typically 2–4 days old by the time it reaches the counter. Some is imported and even older. It's not bad fish — it's just not today's fish.

For fresh-eating and grilling, age is everything. A 24-hour-old sea bream and a 3-day-old sea bream grill completely differently. The fresh one stays moist and separates cleanly from the bone. The older one dries out and flakes unevenly.

Where the Fish Is From

Fish Shop Ardit: Local Ionian fishermen. Named boats, specific waters. We know where it came from.

Supermarkets: Often a mix of local and imported fish, depending on the season and availability. Sometimes Greek, Turkish or Adriatic catch.

Price Comparison

Supermarket fish is sometimes slightly cheaper. Not always — depends on the species and day. But even when it's cheaper, you're getting older fish. For a meal you're going to cook and eat that day, the difference at the counter is usually 100–200 ALL/kg at most. That's under €2 per kg. For fish that's half the age, it's not a comparison worth making.

Fish Shop Ardit: We clean it at the counter, free of charge. Tell us what you're cooking and we'll prep it accordingly.

Supermarkets: Usually sold as-is. Some have cleaning available but not always.

When the Supermarket Makes Sense

If you need fish after 22:00 (when we close), or if you need frozen fish, or if you're after processed fish products — the supermarket is the right choice. We don't have frozen. We don't have fish fingers or smoked fish. We have today's catch, whole, and that's it.
